Iodine

Nicola MasseyNutrition and Wellbeing, Resilience

Iodine is essential for good health but particularly it is necessary for thyroid and metabolic functions. It has the important job of converting food into substances your body can use, it is literally “fuel” for the thyroid.

Good thyroid health also helps your body maintain a healthy weight, keeping a steady heart rate, regulates your temperature and improve your digestion and this is why iodine is so essential as it is the food the thyroid needs.

Chemical check

Maintaining healthy iodine levels can help neutralise fluoride, chlorine, and bromine which are dangerous chemicals that can be found in your tap water, your new car and perhaps the sofa you relax on. They can also severely alter thyroid function.

Chemical mimics

You would have heard of xenoestrogens. they are chemical mimics that can lead to reproductive issues such as ovarian cysts, painful periods and fibroids. Iodine can help protect against these issues.

The natural antiseptic

Iodine is like an antiseptic for the liver. It helps keep viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms in check whilst it stimulates bile production in the gallbladder. It also enters every cell of the liver to assist in hundreds of chemical functions which the liver is responsible for. Iodine also helps the liver protect itself from cancerous growths. You can also apply iodine to cuts to clean the wound.

Iodine foods

To increase your iodine levels try eating more fish, legumes, vegetables and whole grains. You can also use seaweeds and other microalgae such as spirulina which is particularly high in iron too. However, I still would look to supplementing (but only under guidance from a practitioner).

Radiation is everywhere

If you don’t get enough iodine in your diet you’re in danger of not being able to neutralise radiation exposure. Radiation is everywhere, geopathic which is from the earth, x-ray, UV radiation and our biggest current threat is WIFI radiation. We are constancy being bombarded so it is crucial that you get enough iodine to help lessen the burden to you body. Anyone that travels in aeroplanes or has x-ray procedures should seriously consider taking an iodine supplement daily. Personal I take it daily anyway because of the added radiation stress from WIFI.

Other important functions

Iodine is a key player in calcium absorption essential for healthy bones and teeth.

It also is a fantastic antioxidant and has great anti inflammatory properties.

It also is very effective at cleaning the blood of pathogens.

Iodine is also essential for healthy reproductive health

Helps prevent hair-loss

Stabilises your mood.

Where to find iodine

You will find iodine is in eggs, strawberries, fish, seaweeds, dairy, green leafy vegetables, legumes and wholefoods. However, with soil nutrient depletion and the extent of chemical and radiation around us I would strongly suggest supplementing iodine.

Iodine an essential requirement

Please get in touch if you would like information on selecting the correct iodine supplement. There are many on the market but like everything not all suit everyone. Testing for the right one is key. x
